Bigmouth Chorus Performance Dates! – BIGMOUTH Chorus

maximios ⋅ Blog

There’s a lot of things to love about learning to sing in a choir. Of course, there’s the sense of community. Obviously, you learn to sing, and sure, you get time with a teacher who can offer constant feedback and support but one thing we don’t talk about enough is the setting of goals.

Goals are super important when learning any new talent. It’s a clear way of measuring progress but what do you consider a goal? For some, it’s nailing a certain song but for a lot of people, it’s performing live. Most of us who want to sing want to share that gift with others, but it’s probably a bit too much to travel around singing at individual people.

Fortunately, there is another way. As part of the yearly cycle of Bigmouth Chorus and en Choir, we get the opportunity to show off what we’ve learned at an annual concert. It’s a massive deal, a full-house of friends, family and public eager to hear the well-honed instrument the choir has become.

This year, Bigmouth Chorus and en Choir take the stage at a pair of gigs, offering mutual support to each other, with a catalogue of songs including Guns ‘N’ Roses, The Bangles, U2, Queen and Simon & Garfunkel.

Catch Bigmouth, with en Choir, on Friday 19th June at Queens Road Baptist Church in Broadstairs.

Then make your way to Whitstable on Saturday 20th June, St Alphege Church (opposite Whitstable Playhouse) for en Choir, with Bigmouth.

Stormy Summer Singing – BIGMOUTH Chorus

maximios ⋅ Blog

It has been inauspicious start to the summer season. We were thinking it would be all beach weather and barbecue but English Summer weather, true to form, has thrown us for a loop again. So while we’ve spent the last few weeks thinking about how the heat can effect your voice, perhaps its time for us to talk about how storms can change your tone?

The first point is perhaps the most obvious. When it rains, there’s more moisture in the air we breathe. This means there’s a little less oxygen coming into our system and can cause us to breath a bit heavier. To most, this wont be apparent but we’re highly tuned musical masters and we pick up these subtleties.
Taking slow steady breaths makes sure you have that all important breath support and supply to get you through the trickiest of songs. Practising a song a few times to get a feel for where you will need to stop, while it should be commonplace, is also a great way to prepare for a show in the wet weather.

But a little excess moisture isn’t the only concern bad weather brings. We’re getting a little more scientific here, but shortly before a stormfront arrives, the pressure in an area drops dramatically. This is why some people can tell when bad weather is coming by the pains that in various joints. This is caused when low pressure from the air allows inflammation to flair up a little more. However, this inflammation isn’t limited to just dodgy knees. If you are recovering from a vocal injury, either from excessive practice or poor technique, you might find your voice becomes less responsive as the tissue in your throat expands. Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can help offset that though remember many over-the-counter medications come with drawbacks as well as benefits.

And if that wasn’t enough, because of the change in air pressure, the way your voice moves through the air can be altered, causing pitch problems. We get used to a certain amount of pressure, though with that low pressure front before a storm, the air takes on different qualities. As the air gets thinner, we have to push our voices harder to get the same result, which can cause injuries if one is unprepared.
It’s important to be listening as well as singing, to make sure you’re doing what you should. Some might find that in-ear monitors help them respond better by giving a clear channel of audio feedback, however this can be expensive and for a choral singer, it’s not particularly practical for a group of thirty people.

The danger with talking about these kind of problems is it makes them seem dramatic. Stormy weather is more subtle on the voice but it does present issues. Unlike heat, rainy weather isn’t something you can work around. Most of the advice we can give about singing during stormy seasons is practice well and pay attention to your voice.

From bewildering arrangements to classic hits, we’re starting a new path down the road to dreaming of California! This year, to add to our ever mounting repertoire, we are now learning fun and fruity ‘California Dreamin” by The Mamas & The Papas. Know this song or some of the others we’ve mentioned?
Come on down for a free trial session or contact us with any queries.

This year we’ve taken on a challenge of such great enormity that it might be our finest achievement yet once we’ve finished. We are learning…drum roll please…Bohemian Rhapsody by the infamous Queen! The majority of choir members are excited and all geared up to learn this intriguing arrangement of such a well-known song whilst some are still being left a little nervous; we’ll keep up the practice so we can blow you all away come the summer concert! Sound like a challenge you’d like to try? Come on down for a free trial session or contact us with any queries.

Back again with her taste for music and a hectic lifestyle, our choir leader Emily Peasgood is returning to POW! Thanet again this year with a new piece; she said: “VOICE100 is a project I am developing to celebrate girls and women, 100 years since women were first granted the right to vote. My team and I are looking for 100 children and adults of any gender to contribute words or phrases that celebrate girls, women and equality…We are keen to visit youth clubs, scout and guide groups, residential homes and schools to undertake recordings. We are also looking to interview elderly people who have memories of family members that were involved in the suffragette movement.” BIGMOUTH chorus are also taking part in this project so if you’d like to come and see us then click here for more information or contact us with any queries.

Happy New Year! To celebrate surviving the festivities of the Christmas break, we will be back on Tuesday 9th January to begin preparations for July (we like to wish the year away!). Singing some of the songs featured in our Family and Friends Party, we will also be adding a whole host of new material for our annual Concert. Fancy having a try? Come down for a free trial rehearsal on Tuesday at 7:30pm or contact us with any queries.

BIGMOUTH Chorus are a brand new and innovative non-audition singing group in Thanet for anyone aged 14 and over who loves to sing. You don’t need experience to take part and don’t even need to think you can sing! Our role is to support you in believing you can while having a great time. Get in touch if you or someone you know would like to join a fantastic and fun choir.

We have made it to our last meeting of the year after three venues, two events and a fantastic social meeting (and a partridge in a pear tree!). Last week saw the party of the year with our Family and Friends Charity Concert. We raised an amazing £416.43 for Oasis UK and everyone had a great time! We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone in January.

This is it! One week and we will be hosting the most festive event of the year! We are all super excited to be part of the BIGMOUTH Chorus Christmas Concert 2017, particularly as this year we are raising money for the Oasis UK charity for victims of domestic abuse. We will be gaily singing our jolly collection of seasonal tunes in addition to showing off some of the hits we have learnt so far this year; so come on down on Tuesday 12th December at 7:30pm to Dreamland, Margate for fun, laughs and musical merriment or contact us with any queries.

…or should we say Singers and Bell Ringers! Some of us are involved in an event in Canterbury. Organised by our wonderful leader and animateur, Emily Peasgood, the event is being run by Free Range who say, “Featuring specially commissioned pieces and interventions from the Seasalter Singers, the Bedford Handbell Ensemble, Henry Dagg’s virtuoso musical sawing and an interactive performance involving sweets from composer Jason Hodgson, this evening promises to be one of Canterbury’s finest Christmas-themed experimental music events. Prepare to be entertained, surprised, regaled and served… and be there with bells on.” So we are packing our bells and hope to see you there on Thursday 14th December at 7:30pm!

We finished and polished ‘Carol of the Bells‘ last night and the whole choir sounded great! With this and other festive tunes under our belts we are full-steam ahead to our Christmas Charity Concert in December! Do you like the sound of these songs and want to learn more? You’re more than welcome to come to a free trial rehearsal on a Tuesday at 7:30pm or contact us with any queries.

We are incredibly proud of our choir leader and chief rubber chicken lover! Recently, Emily was nominated for not just once but twice for a British Composers’ Award! She said she was, “very pleased to announce that my works BIRDS and other Stories (2017) and Crossing Over (2016) have been nominated for British Composer Awards. The awards promote the art of composition, recognise the creative talent of composers and sound artists, and bring their music to a wider audience. They are unique in making contemporary music, jazz and sonic art the focus of their annual celebration. Founded by BASCA, The British Composer Awards are sponsored by PRS and presented in association with BBC Radio 3 who provide exclusive broadcast coverage of the awards.  The ceremony will take place on 6 December at the British Museum.” We would like to wish Emily the best of luck for the awards ceremony in December.

No, not until Christmas Day! There’s 34 days until the most festive party of them all! That’s right, we are in full preparation for our Friends and Family Charity Concert in aid of Oasis UK Domestic Abuse Service on 12th December. We like to raise the Christmas spirit with a few festive classics such as ‘Fairytale of New York‘ and ‘Carol of the Bells‘ plus much more at the same time as raising money for a great cause. Sound good? Come down for a free trial rehearsal on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 or contact us with any queries; all we ask is enthusiasm and there are strictly no auditions!

We’re back! With well rested throats and clear albeit chilly lungs, we roared back last night with an awesome rehearsal! This term will not only be a continuation of the fun and varying difficulty songs that we talked to you about in previous entries, but also it is the run up to our Christmas party so we will be learning and rehearsing some more festive tunes! If you’d like to give BIGMOUTH Chorus a try then feel free to pop along to a free trial rehearsal or contact us with any queries.

Last night was our last rehearsal for a little while as we take a break over school half term; and it was a rather brilliant one, even if we do say so ourselves. But never fear! We will be back in force, singing our lungs out in just two short weeks. If you’d like to give BIGMOUTH Chorus a go then please feel free to attend a free trial rehearsal…just not on Tuesday 24th October! We’ll be back on Tuesday 31st October so come on down or contact us with any enquiries.

We are really excited to announce that on 12th December we will be hosting a family and friends charity event at Dreamland, Margate! This fundraiser will be in aid of Oasis UK, a charity committed to aiding and improving the lives of those affected by domestic abuse. If you’d like to be part of the choir behind this event, feel free to pop down for a free trial rehearsal or contact us with any queries!

Have you heard? The official photos from the concert we featured in this year are now available for viewing! The awesome photographer, Ren Smith, did a marvellous job of capturing both the final rehearsal and the concert. So if you’d like to see a bit of what we do then please feel free to have a browse! If you’d like to come to a free trial session then you’re welcome to attend on a Tuesday evening at 7:30pm or contact us with any queries.

This week in a fantastic rehearsal we were learning ‘True Colours‘ as performed by Cyndi Lauper in 1986. We’ve also been tackling tongue twisters with the fun and fast paced ‘Rhythm of Life‘ by the talented Sammy Davis Jr. and as seen in Sweet Charity. Fancy trying these and many more songs? Come down to a free trial session on a Tuesday at 7:30pm or contacts us with any queries.

We are back in strength as we start our new year of rehearsals! We’ve already started cracking on two songs with, ‘True Colours’, ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ and ‘Only You’. Everyone seems really excited to be back and we are over the moon to tell you we’ve had lots of new and returning faces coming through the door! Would you like to give en Choir a try? Come on down to a free trial rehearsal or contact us with any queries.

At the end of last term we decided that choir members would choose every song we are singing this year and next by popular vote. After making a very long list of songs, the results are in! So far some of the highlights have been ‘California Dreamin‘ (The Mamas and The Papas) and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ (Queen) with over 20 votes each! The choir have decided to bring back some of last year’s songs that they enjoyed too much to say goodbye to such as ‘Hallelujah‘ (Leonard Cohen) and ‘The Lamb‘ (John Tavener); but we have also branched out to some new songs featuring artists such as ABBA, Sting and The Bangles. Fancy singing any of these great hits and many more? Come down for a free trial rehearsal on a Tuesday night at 7:30pm at the Walpole Bay Hotel in Margate. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Our final rehearsal of the year was last night and it went with a blast! The choir sounded incredible and we’re set to go to Whitstable this Saturday to feature in en Choir’s annual summer concert along with the brilliant house band with Matt Hodge on percussion and Akos Hasznos on bass. Doors open at 19:00 this Saturday, 22 July and we hope to see you all there!

We are off to try a new venue this week! This upcoming Tuesday will mark our trial of the Walpole Bay Hotel in Margate. With a spacious function room at this lovely sea side venue, we are hoping to start a new chapter in BIGMOUTH History! Feel free to come on down for a free trial session or contact us with any queries.

She, of course, being our ever-striving, ever-smiling, practically effervescent choir leader, Emily Peasgood; who only last night presented members of the public with VOICE100! This piece, commissioned by POW! Thanet was designed to celebrate 100 years since women were granted the vote. POW! Thanet say, “Featuring the recorded voices of 100 children and adults who share their experiences, this powerful and provocative artwork is at the very heart of POW!” In addition to this installation, we along with many members of our sister choir en Choir sung an anthem which we were incredibly proud to be a part of. This sort of happening just goes to show that the power of women, to this day, continues to grow.

Even as the weather stays chilly we keep fighting our way to rehearsals and as promised, here is an update on our toughest challenge yet: Bohemian Rhapsody is nearly complete! You read that right, we are nearly there with plenty of time to spare which means we have another 16 rehearsals to polish and perfect this piece as well as many others so that by the time you hear it at our annual concert it will blow your socks off! Are you interested in blowing socks? Come down for a free trial or contact us with any queries!

There have been some discussions going around some of the choir in recent weeks and there has been some rumour of BIGMOUTH having their own concert this year as well as supporting our sibling choir, en Choir; who would in turn support us in our concert (if it happened). This is in no way a guarantee but it is a super exciting possibility that we just couldn’t keep to ourselves! Fingers crossed all will be organised – watch this space! Want to be part of our concert? Come down for a free trial or contact us with any queries.

“Now throw your hands up in the air! And wave’em around like you just don’t care, and if you wanna party let me hear you yell, ‘Cause we’ve got it goin’ on again!” That’s right everyone, we are back on Tuesday 20th February with more of our melodic grooving. We’ll be hitting the ground running, continuing to work on our challenge of Bohemian Rhapsody but also revisiting some old favourites such as Sweet Child of Mine and True Colours. If you’d like to try out BIGMOUTH Chorus then feel free to pop down to a rehearsal for a free trial or contact us with any queries – see you all there!

With Winter just around the corner, the dreaded cold and flu season isn’t far behind. These bugs can wreak havoc with our voices and it’s important to know how to handle them.

Firstly, if you have a cold – DON’T SING. Your voice needs time to rest, trying to sing before it’s had that time to recover will only put them through unwarranted stress. Before trying to sing, make sure you try these tips to help your voice recover. Continue reading “How to deal with a cold”

Now that term is well and truly underway, we can stop telling you all the reason why you should join BIGMOUTH (you already know how fun it is!). Instead, as the cold weather rushes in, we thought it might be nicer to tell you how to take care of that voice you’re developing. Continue reading “5 tips to take of your voice”

Singing is incredibly vulnerable. We all want to be able to hold a perfect note, and the ability to produce a little melody on command is infinitely cool. However, many of us haven’t yet learned to use our voices effectively and thus we hide them away. We identify with out voices immensely, so when our voice is less than perfect we feel that we are less than perfect. A report in the American Psychology found out that we actually express more emotion with our voice than our face so it’s no wonder we want to guard them a little. Continue reading “Making friends: how choirs build social bonds”

We all know that singing in a choir can make you happier but in recent studies a whole host of other benefits have been unearthed. With the increase in happy hormones within our body, singing lowers blood pressure and stress levels but there is also evidence that suggests that taking part in a choir can alleviate the symptoms of depression, Parkinson’s and lung disease.

Fortunately for us our fearless leader Emily has worked with The Sidney De Haann Research Centre as a research assistant on their groundbreaking exploration of choirs and their benefits. Continue reading “The unexpected side effects of choirs”

Singing is one of those talents that everyone wishes they possessed. There’s something really satisfying about being able to belt out a solid note on command or to drop jaws at a karaoke night.

Unfortunately for many of us, we get taught that we can’t sing and that it’s better for us to politely step aside when the microphone comes our way. We get obsessed with the idea that unless we have a five octave range, we’re not cut out to sing.

However, this is the big secret. Everyone can sing, it just takes practice. Continue reading “Everybody Can Sing!”

If you’d have said the word ‘choir’ a few years ago, you’d expect eye-rolling or a glaze to fog up people’s eyes but in the last decade, choirs have taken on a very different tone (no pun intended). In the last ten years, Choirs have become cool.

Instead of focusing strictly on gospel affair, there’s been a swell of interest in choirs catering to more modern tastes, like Bigmouth Chorus and en Choir in Whitstable, covering rock, pop and soul songs with the power and versatility of a choir. It’s estimated that about 2.8 MILLION Brits have joined a choir, no doubt inspired by the shift in focus from classic music to more accessible genres. In fact, it’s not even unheard of for choir acts to find their way onto TV talent shows such as X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent. Continue reading “Choirs are cool!”

This is it ladies and gents! The final week leading to our annual concert next Friday 20 July.  We are also featuring in en Choir’s concert on Saturday 21 July too! Tickets for both events are available online here and on the door (subject to availability). Come on down for a fun, feel good evening or contact us with any queries – see you all there!

As Emily returns and A Requiem for Crossbones comes to an end, the excitement does not – Emily says, “I’m excited to announce that for the first time one of my artworks is coming to my home town of Ramsgate!! Requiem for Crossbones will exhibit at Ramsgate Festival of Sound 2018 by Ramsgate Arts on Saturday 28 July – Sunday 29 July from 11am-5pm in Albion Place Gardens, on Albion Place.” With this unique new piece from our choir leader coming home, we are all buzzing with anticipation for what this could bring next for her and her career. Good luck!

Yes ladles and gentlespoons, it is that time of year again! Our annual concert! Hard copy tickets have officially gone on sale!
If you know a member of the choir, ask them to grab your tickets at a rehearsal or contact the choir administrator, Elli to purchase tickets. They are also available on WeGotTickets.
Have you been thinking of joining enChoir but not sure, or think it is too late for this choir year? Come and have a listen at this year’s concert and see if you enjoy yourself or contact us with any queries.

A concert update this week; with choir leader, Emily Peasgood returned from installing her latest work, Requiem for Crossbones, the choir was buzzing with excitement for our final term of the choir year.

Well, we are disappearing for a bit – but not long! Next week is half-term so while the kids are taking a break, so are we!
